Clint Dyer awarded honorary doctorate by University of Essex
Director, writer and actor Clint Dyer has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Essex in recognition of his contribution to theatre and his long-standing connection to the university’s East 15 Acting School.
Dyer, who trained at East 15 in the early 1990s, received the honour at the university’s graduation ceremony in Colchester.
Accepting the award, Dyer – associate artist at the National Theatre – said he hoped “it can in some way be a reminder to you all... to never ever give up”.
Dyer served as deputy artistic director of the National Theatre until 2025 and was the first Black artist to write, direct and perform at the venue, later becoming the first Black director to stage Othello there in 2022.
Dyer has also won a best actor award for his performance in the Olivier-winning production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the National Theatre.
His recent theatre credits include The Big Life, Death of England and this year’s production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at London’s Old Vic. He has also featured in the top five of The Stage 100 in both 2024 and 2025.
Presenting the award, East 15 senior lecturer Robin Sneller said Dyer’s achievements had "broken barriers and created opportunities for others", adding that his career reflected a commitment to ensuring "our national stages reflect the richness, diversity and complexity of the society they serve".
Sneller added that Dyer is "one of the most influential creative voices in the United Kingdom".
