Oldham Coliseum’s reopening delayed again to 2027
Oldham Coliseum was expected to reopen for the 2026 panto season
Oldham Coliseum’s reopening has been delayed again, with the venue now set to begin performances in 2027.
Oldham Council said the revised timetable was due to the ongoing refurbishment and unexpected structural issues uncovered during the project.
Oldham Coliseum was saved from closure in 2024 following the Save Oldham Coliseum campaign, which was backed by Equity. The venue was due to reopen for the 2025 pantomime season before that target was pushed back to 2026.
Contractor Tilbury Douglas said many of the problems only became apparent once work on the historic building was underway.
Tilbury Douglas regional director Kabir Salihi said the company remained "committed to delivering a high-quality venue that respects the Coliseum’s heritage and serves Oldham for generations to come".
The council has approved an additional £7m in grant funding to complete the refurbishment. In the meantime, the Coliseum will continue producing work across the borough, with performances at venues including Whittles and George Street Chapel.
Responding, Equity North West official Karen Lockney said: "Equity is disappointed to learn that the reopening of Oldham Coliseum will now not be until 2027. However, we understand the need to ensure the building is safe and fit for purpose."
She said the union had recently met with the theatre’s chief executive and would maintain regular contact to keep members informed of progress.
Lockney also welcomed plans for the company to continue producing work at venues across Oldham while the building remains closed, saying this would provide employment for artists and maintain the theatre’s presence in the community.
She added: "Equity will continue holding the Coliseum’s management to account on behalf of our members, but hope to work constructively towards this much-loved venue being fully functioning next year, producing shows that reflect the community it serves."
Oldham Coliseum recently appointed Nick Bagnall as creative director.
