Giant starring John Lithgow to be screened in cinemas

Mark Rosenblatt’s Olivier award-winning play Giant, starring John Lithgow as Roald Dahl, is set for a worldwide cinema release later this year following runs in London and on Broadway.

Filmed live at the Harold Pinter Theatre with the original West End cast, the production will be shown in more than 900 cinemas across 18 countries from 19th November.

The release has been announced by producers Brian and Dayna Lee, Stephanie Kramer and Nicole Kramer, Josh Fiedler and Robyn Goodman, alongside the Royal Court Theatre in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing.

Screenings will take place across the UK, US, Canada, Australia and additional international territories.

Lithgow said: “In my 53-year, 25-show career on Broadway, I’ve rarely experienced the kind of audience response that we feel night after night with Giant.”

Rosenblatt added: “When I began to write Giant, my first play, I never dreamed that it would be seen by so many.”

Written by Rosenblatt and directed by Nicholas Hytner, Giant premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in September 2024 before transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre and later Broadway’s Music Box Theatre earlier this year.

The production won three Olivier awards, including best new play, best actor for Lithgow and best supporting actor for Elliot Levey.

The filmed production also stars Aya Cash as Jessie Stone, Rachael Stirling as Felicity Dahl, Tessa Bonham Jones as Hallie and Richard Hope as Wally.

The play explores the fallout surrounding Dahl’s antisemitic remarks and their lasting impact on his reputation and legacy.

The production features design by Bob Crowley, lighting by Anna Watson and sound by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite.
